Bury My Heart in Temecula: The Three Pechanga Massacres
There are three Pechanga Massacres in our last 175 years. 1847, 2004, 2006
1846 - Up to 125 Luisenos were killed in a December attack in retaliation for the killings of 11 Pauma persons who had stolen horses.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temecula_Massacre
2004 - Over 250 Pechanga men, women and children from Temecula Band of Luiseno Indians were eliminated by a corrupt enrollment committee. Members included: Ruth Masiel, Frances Miranda, Ihrene Scearse
2006 - Over 150 more Pechanga men, women and children, including award winning elders were eliminated by same enrollment committee and supported by the corrupt Pechanga Tribal Council headed by Mark Macarro of Colton High School.
Pechanga has eliminated more of their tribe than any outside force in it's recorded history. Congratulations to Pechanga for the mass extermination of their people. Blood drips from the knife wounds in the back........ and thru the heart
Our resident tribal hack will probably again say that our rights were not violated and also the following, "the non members were disenrolled because the facts were not on their side and they were afforded due process of law."
ReplyDeleteWell the foremost expert on tribal history, Mr. Antonio Ashman who is called a vaunted (much praised) elder on Pechanga's official Web site said in a notarized statement prior to the first written enrollment of 1978 that he remembered Hunter family matriarch Paulina Hunter as a member of the Band.
And that is just one of the many facts that were on our side that were ignored by the biased enrollment committee who decided our fate.
Also, by allowing the sisters and aunts of people who submitted and/or signed statements against us to rule on our disenrollment case violated not only the Indian Civil Rights Act (ICRA) but also the equal protection clause of the Pechanga Band's own constitution and bylaws under Article V which forbids Malice or Predjudice of tribal members.
So how were our rights not violated and how again were we afford due process?
So answer me this time!
SO TRIBAL HACK AREN'T YOU GOING TO AGAIN LOOK STUPID WHEN YOU MAKE THE SAME BOGUS GENERAL STATEMENTS WHEN I HAVE ANSWERED THEM BEFORE YOU EVEN SAID THEM?
Paulina Hunter was on every census record for the Pechanga reservation for the late 1800's until her death in 1899.
ReplyDeletePechanga tribal member Dolores Tortuga said when asked by the probate examiner in the 1915 hearings for Paulina Hunter's allotment, "did you know and were you acquainted with the deceased PECHANGA INDIAN ALLOTTEE PAULINA HUNTER during her life time?"
Tortuga answered, "yes, I knew her as a neighbor when PECHANGA INDIANS LIVED AT THE PAUBA RANCH NEAR TEMECULA, CALIFORNIA."
Clearly Tortuga was including Paulina in the inclusive "WE PECHANGA INDIANS".
When new enrollment committee members were elected in 2002, including a descendant of Paulina Hunter, these new committee members brought allegations of wrongdoing against enrollment committe members from he CPP faction of the tribe that they, among other allegations, did not processing applications of people who were qualified for tribal membership who ended up being stuck in the moratorium.
Yet these committee members from the CPP were still allowed to rule on the disenrollment case of the Hunters, a clear conflict of interest, and a violation of the equal protection clause in the Band's constitution and bylaws under Article V.
So still more evidence that shows that we, the descendants of Paulina Hunter, meet the requirments for tribal membership and that we didn't get due process of law when we were disenrolled.
SO TRBIBAL HACK, HOW AGAIN WERE WE AFFORDED DUE PROCESS AND HOW WERE THE FACTS NOT ON OUR SIDE, I AM STILL WAITING!
So we were, as OP points out, massacred with a stroke of a pen.
Some typos in my last point but I think people get the idea.
ReplyDeleteDolores Tortuga said, WHEN WE PECHANGA INDIANS LIVED AT THE PAUBA RANCH.
Tribal hack, you wanna try some of your other tired so called arguments or should I again refute those too before you post them?
Paulina Hunters probate record of 1915 wich confirmed her membership in the Temecula band of Luiseno Mission Indians.
ReplyDeleteDolores Tortuga
Daniel Tortuga
David Jose Rodriguez
Solida Stevenson
All recorded oral recognition.
The above depositions were submitted with hundreds of other documents requested by the enrollment committee who needed certified red ribbon copies.
ReplyDeleteThe enrollment committee pulled a 1928 application for the Indian rolls of one of Paulina Hunters descendents and said because he put that his Grandmother was a San Luis Rey Indian, that this somehow diqualified the Hunter clans membership in the Temecula Band of Luiseno mission Indians.
"The enrollment committee pulled a 1928 application for the Indian rolls of one of Paulina Hunters descendents and said because he put that his Grandmother was a San Luis Rey Indian, that this somehow diqualified the Hunter clans membership in the Temecula Band of Luiseno mission Indians."
ReplyDeleteBut other people who were cleared from disenrollment, including people who sat in judgement of the Hunters, had family members with the same San Luis Rey reference.
Dr. John Johnson of the Santa Barbara Muesum of Natural history, the tribe's own hired expert, said in his report on the ancestry of Paulina Hunter, that a lot of current tribal members had the same designation as Hunter and that didn't mean that she wasn't a Pechanga Temecula Indian.
Where do think the term Luiseno came from anyway?
So again tribal hack(s) refute our facts and show us how we were given due process.
Folks, all he (or they) have is general statements which are easily shot down.
The documentation we turned in would have satisfied any reasonble unbiased people who may have doubts about our credentials for tribal membership.
But we were not dealing with reasonable unbiased people but with biased people with conflicts of interest in our case who were hellbent on rubber stamping their foregone conclusion that we were going to be disenrolled.
SO WE WERE MASSACRED BY THE STROKE OF A PEN, A PAPER GENOCIDE!
By the way, we see this as a pattern of behavior by rouge elements but as I said, if we were still in the tribe, we would be addressing these issues internally and not publically.
ReplyDeleteAgain, if you agree with us, are you addressing these issues to the leadership?
Because if you are, then my sincere apologies.
My feeling is that you aren't doing so but are just irritated that we are.
wrong thread on my last post. I will copy it to the other thread.
ReplyDeleteA poster was saying that it was just individuals who were doing wrong and not the whole tribe.
how do you get told your not pechanga or temecula indian and you have a california indian number???????(that states your temecula indian??????)
ReplyDeleteFrom what I understand, the enrollment commettee says that being a Temecula Indian is not good enough. You have to be part of a "special sub-set" of that Tribe.
ReplyDeleteThen why does the tribe get to claim Temecula Indian lands that are not in the Pechanga valley?
ReplyDeleteBoth the Pechanga casino and the Journey at Pechanga golf course are not in the area that the tribe relocated to after the eviction from the old Temecula village sites.
So the tribe should have to share the benefits gained from historically Temecula Indian lands that are not in the Pechanga valley with the descendants of the Temecula Band regardless whether they are in the tribe or not.
It doesn't matter what documents you have, current Pechanga government will do as they please to benefit themselves. And if the enrollment committee doesn't do as Macarro wants he will turn enrollment over to Culture committee so they can get even more families out.
ReplyDeleteI'm embarrassed to say I'm from Pechanga.
what ??? culture committe, are they thinking of getting more families out (and is the enrollment committee standing up of to him)?
ReplyDeletethey can,t over ride enrollment!!!
They have and can do whatever they want. Proven to date.
ReplyDeletewho,s the members of the culture committe?
ReplyDeleteYou are just start ridiculous rumors.
ReplyDeleteTo quote Mark Macro speaking the General Assembly just before disenrolling the Hunters.
ReplyDelete"No families are up for disenrollment, it is just a rumor and is not true"
But there's a difference here, some of you are just making up stuff at random, i.e. the cultural committee would become the enrollment committee. That is just a ridiculous rumor.
