Today is California's Native American Day, celebrated the 4th Friday of each September. San Manuel has events this whole week.
Today, our people continue to celebrate the traditions of the past. Here at the San Manuel Reservation, we sing and dance Serrano songs, as well as the Cahuilla bird songs, that our elders have taught us. Tribes in Northern California, such as the Yurok, perform traditional dances like the Brush dance.
What isn't mentioned this week is that disenrolled and moratorium people would make up the second largest tribe in California. The Picayune has terminated 500 Native Americans and Pechanga has done the same to 400. Additionally, Pechanga is keeping at least 100 more Native Americans from their place in the sun.
It would be good NOT to support: Pechanga, Picayune, Redding, Jamul; Robinson Rancheria; Enterprise Rancheria among many that you will find at http://tribalcorruption.com/ . While celebrating California's Native American Heritage, we must remind ourselves that THIS CENTURY, the worst enemy of Indians isn't the white man, but a new breed: The Corrupt Tribal Council. Yet, these non-members cannot let go their intense hankering for their former status due to the income this status involved from a per capita payment. Dear readers,
Disenrolling entire clans (hundreds of extended families) is uncommon to the indian way. If the abovementioned investigations, research, examining of details are done fairly it would hold more water. Keep reading this blog and you will continually see these simple steps were and continue to be overlooked.
I am not fooled by what Anonymous September 24, 2010 6:56 PM wrote. Does he think we readers are so simple minded to be taken in by what is so obviously a biased and bigoted statement? He makes no attempt to refute or disprove any of your statements or accusations.
I have gone and spoke to people who are still in the Tribe and live on the reservation. They know that what was done to you was wrong, but don't think they can do anything to correct it (or else maybe are afraid to try and correct it, not sure just an observation).

To many good comments, but where is Ms.Jenny, Ed? Raymond? Where are their comments to explain how Indians "adopted" have more ties than true Natives. How "disenrollment" was NEVER a process in tribes. You submitted your papers if you met the criteria you were enrolled. Now years later they are reopening files and disenrolling on by any means. In the case of Pechanga the TRIBE presented, voted, and passed a petition stating NO MORE DISENROLLMENTS. But the tribal council over ruled and disenrolled the Hunters anyway. Does that sound like due process, fair tribal leadership when they go AGAINST the TRIBE? Anyone who says disenrollment is a process is lying. Anyone who says, you may not understand it, well you don't understand because it is made up with no criteria, no legitimacy, and NOT customary in ANY Native American Culture. Pechanga adopted some families at one time and look how they pay back the goodness of the tribe.

If we can never do anything about what happened to us, then whatever we say here means nothing so why do you bother to come here and comment?

Article V of the Band's constitution and bylaws says

So to our critic from the tribe, how was allowing biased people with a conflict of interest to rule on our disenrollments not malice or prejudice against us?
Prior to the first written enrollment of 1979 we the Hunters got none other than Antonio Ashman, called a vaunted (much praised) elder on Pechanga's own official Web site, to gives us a notarized statement affirming he knew our ancestor Paulina Hunter as a member of the Band.
One of the ways that was listed in the supplement to that written enrollment application as acceptable proof of tribal membership was to have a recognized tribal member vouch for an applicant.
So what better person to vouch for us than Mr. Ashman, who lived in the historical period of the late 1800's when the reservation was created and who knew better than anyone else, especially someone alive today, who was a legitimate tribal member and who wasn't?
So again, how did we not prove we are legitimate tribal members?

In my letter I received from the council when they interviewed us to determine if malice or prejudice was shown against us during our hearing in front of the enrollment committee. it states that there wasn't enough malice or prejudice displayed against us.
Just how much is enough malice or prejudice against us? And isn't this an admission that there was malice or prejudice against us, but it just wasn't enough (according to there standards)?

To the uninvolved and uninformed this is farthest form the truth. My mom’s first cousin Jenny Miranda is still in the tribe and she had made it clear back in the early 90s that if we did not vote the way she wanted us to vote she would make sure that we were kicked out. This is not hearsay this is a witnessed statement.
We all know the truth that the current corrupt council and back stabbing leader M. Maccaro knew that our voting bloc was the largest of the families and that we would not be controlled nor would we allow the corruption that now infests our tribe. Also we were seen as outsiders at tribal meetings because some of us did not grow up living on or next to the rez, I think that it is because most if not all of us are educated to some degree.
For those who are educated you may agree that Pechanga has a very low educational level in fact I would guess that there are more Alcoholics and Drug addict living on the rez than there are college graduates with asociates or bachelor’s much less mastors or doctorial degree. This is not a statement meant to ridicule or insult,and for those who do have degrees I applaud you.
Which group are you in?
As for the honest working members of the tribe who actually care about our plight find a way to communicate with one another and us for our history as a proud and honest people is in jeopardy of being lost.
Keep in mind the Disenrollment Procedure, authored by Jenny M. as tribal chair, that Pechanga once had was first voted into existence in 1988 the same year the IGRA (Indian Gaming Regulatory Act) was singed into law by President Ragen.
Wonder how many voted were necessary to bring this sham procedure into existence…
It was explained to me that it did not pass the first time it was presented.
It took over 500 votes to have it removed from tribal law in 2005.

if all the Pechanga disenrolled, the moratorium and the banished people would form a tribe, and they could , they have certificate of degree blood, they would be as big or bigger than what'S NOW LEFT IN THE PECHANGA TRIBE.
So what is the CPP view on the people in the moratorium? If someone in the moratorium is blood related to a current member what's the argument? You didn't fill out an application in time so now you're not Indian. I'm pretty sure being Indian has more to do with your ancestors than when you wrote your name on a piece of paper.

Perhaps for the same reason that when they get drunk, they speak to each other in Spanish, not Luiseno. This used to embarrass me, and I would wish that they could please stop speaking Spanish (which I don't really understand, and speak at least a little of there native tong (which I do understand a bit)
