21st Century California Indian Wars: Pechanga vs. Gabrieleno Tongva Macarro Against Recognition of Tribe In Casino Market Area

A recent FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) request has brought to light a bit of skullduggery, from the Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians Chairman Mark Macarro in 2013.
Macarro writes to then Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar:

" .. we STRONGLY OPPOSE the efforts of the Gabrieleno Tongva to achieve recognition...

The Pechanga Tribe has already usurped itself in the Gabrieleno Tongva historic tribal area, by appropriating Tongva remains ...remember? Does anyone believe that Macarro gives a whit about the "recognition process"? Pechanga has gotten it's name changed in the Federal registry, and it's NOT the tribe the government recognized. WHat about keeping a tribe from getting recognized, opening a casino and taking lucrative market share? Which is MORE LIKELY?

  1. He should learn to mind his own business, like he has told the "white man". Speaking of "the white man", how come he does nothing when white directors and vice-presidents allow blatant theft to happen on the PRC craps table to the tune of $500,000? And those who intentionally pulled this heist get a slap on the wrist, yet not terminated and prosecuted for theft on federal land. Where is the "sovereignty" in that standard of practice? So it goes.

  4. You better believe it. Justice will prevail for us and people like Mark (Pechanga Tribe) should be countable for their action . . . I mean everything should be strip from them and serve real time in prison for fraud and stealing our identity for their own pleasure and doing whatever they want but that's about to end.

  5. Interesting how no tribe, no individual too small to escape the larger, richer tribe's view.

Don't give another tribe a foothold, don't give the Gabrielenos an opportunity to rise from poverty, like Pechanga did.

Pechanga even gave adopted, non Pechanga people the right to be rich, but not Tongva??

  6. Hmmmm, Mark must want something, he wants Catalina Island so he can build a Casino there, and sure as heck that there is something else that he wants by requesting this. If the Gabrielenos are not federally recognized and Pechanga is and they received the remains from the Island, then Mark can claim the Island as Pechanga land.

  7. Catalina Island could never support a casino...they have a horrible water shortage. And the Island is owned by the Wrigley chewing gum family.
Karma got Raymond, when is it going to get Mark?

  8. So what? What you gonna do about it? Maybe Feinstein will help, or maybe Boxer. To bad Macarro's on their rolodex's.

  9. @ 8:35 PM
Karma will get Mark M. and Robert Smith when the members grow some balls and stand up to them and get them out of office.
How can the Members of Pala and Pechanga expect the government to help them if they can't help themselves.
All you need to do is go to a Tribal Meeting and vote them out without any fear.

  10. If their family doesn't care, why should outsiders care?

  11. "What happens in Las Vegas stays in Las Vegas...", what happens at Pechanga, everybody knows about.
